PHOTOS & VIDEO – Royal De Luxe Limerick Giant Day 3 – The Journey Ends
Royal De Luxe Limerick Giant Day 3 – Around 100,000 people thronged Limerick city centre this afternoon to say farewell to the #LimerickGiant following her three day visit to the city. While today’s parade may have been shorter than the previous two days, it certainly did not lack intensity. The giant granny said a fond farewell to the city – but not before a tickertape celebration, pipe bands, and an elaborate set of mourners paid their tributes. The festivities were delayed by an hour, with the route being changed by event organisers, due to the fact the tide on the Shannon was deemed too low for granny to sail away in mid-afternoon as had been planned. Instead, following a procession through the city centre she lay ‘in state’ in the heart of O’Connell Street for several hours. At the start of the parade at the Treaty Stone, all possible vantage points were taken up by the tens of thousands of spectators. And as the bells of St Munchin’s rang in 1pm, there was a massive cheer as granny entered the fray. The cheers grew louder when she spat on the crowd gathered at Thomond Bridge. Granny was at the centre of the parade, and was joined by the Limerick Pipe Band, and a group of mourners clad in black. A bus carrying potatoes followed behind. Tickertape exploded into the clear blue sky over Clancy’s Strand, while dry ice was pumped into the Shannon as Granny crossed over Sarsfield Bridge. At Charlotte’s Quay, granny was lifted 20 feet high and into her giant bed, before she made one final tour through the city centre.
