Emma Langford, the talented Limerick songwriter and singer has been announced as a shortlist nominee for Best Emerging Artist in the RTE  1 Folk Awards.

Last year, Emma just released her debut album, Quiet Giant. The album showcases ten tracks, set against a stunning backdrop of strings, percussion and piano. Songs of the album dance lightly between genres, weaving a coming-of-age narrative that explores love, heartbreak, and wrestling with self-doubt.

During the years, the alternative folk guitarist and singer-songwriter has been performing in a lot of wonderful gigs and some are charity gigs that Emma donated all of the proceeds from the events to local charities.

Emma imbues her music with the soul and style of Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy, and Joan Baez; her distinctive vocal style demonstrates a blend of Irish lilt with folk and jazz. Her delicate guitar work complements an intuitive sense of melody, which is loved by music lovers.

Emma noticed that she was shortlisted for the nomination of the Radio 1 Folk Awards from a tweet by the local music venue, Dolan’s Pub. She said: “I was totally sceptical, assuming they must have made some mistake and misread something. It came as a lovely surprise. ”

“It feels great to have all my hard work of the past few years recognised by our national broadcaster. RTÉ Radio has been really kind and very supportive since I released my debut EP in 2016, so I’m really delighted to get this official recognition.” she continued.

Emma successfully crowd-funded and launched a debut EP, simply titled “Emma Langford”, which was toured at sold-out dates across the country in 2016.

Her debut album“Quiet Giant” was lead by the album’ s single, ‘Closed Book’. The record received considerable airtime on RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ Radio1, Lyric FM, BBC Northern Ireland, and Newstalk. It remained in the independent Irish charts, and on the RTÉ Radio 1 playlist for many weeks following its release, securing the young artist’s place as a staple of the national folk scene.

Emma completed a hugely successful month-long tour of Germany and Switzerland with the Irish Folk Festival in October 2017, receiving rave reviews and breaking tour records for CD sales.  Also, in 2017 Emma Langford was voted “Best Solo Female Artist” by Pure M Magazine and was listed as a Hot Press Magazine one-to-watch in the summer of 2016.

Emma wishes good luck to everyone that is nominated, and she would continue producing great music works, “Everyone out there making brilliant music that makes being part of this community so wonderful.”

The inaugural RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards will take place in Vicar Street in Dublin on 25th October 2018. The event will be hosted by presenters Ruth Smith and John Creedon and broadcast live on RTÉ Radio 1. In addition, RTÉ Radio 1 will produce five separate folk music documentaries, which will be broadcast in the run-up to the awards night.

RTÉ Radio 1 establishes this event which will celebrate the huge range of folk music being played in Ireland today. On the night nine awards will be presented including Best Emerging Folk Artist, Best Folk Album of the Year and Best Folk Group.
