A new community running event aimed at raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society will take place this May as the Rua Running Community launches Run Against Cancer 2026, a 5K and 10K road race on Sunday, May 24th, in Ballylanders, Co. Limerick.

Rua Running, a local running club founded in late 2025 by Andrew O’Halloran, is organising the event as its first major community initiative, bringing together runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities for a meaningful day focused on fitness, community, and fundraising.

Participants will have the option of completing either a fully timed and chipped 5K or 10K route, with all finishers receiving a commemorative medal. The course takes place in the shadow of the Galtee Mountains, offering scenic countryside views as participants pass the beautiful Griston Bog in the Ballyhoura region, showcasing some of the area’s most stunning natural surroundings. Entry costs just €10, making it one of the most affordable timed running events currently available in Ireland.

Importantly, all funds raised will go directly to the Irish Cancer Society, supporting vital services for individuals and families affected by cancer nationwide.

Bib collection will begin at 9:00 am, with the event starting at 10:30 am on the morning of May 24th, with registration now open through the event’s newly launched website.

Speaking about the event, Rua Running founder Andrew O’Halloran said, “Rua Running only began in late 2025, but from the start we wanted to build more than a running club — we wanted to create a community that gives something back.”

“Run Against Cancer 2026 is our first major event, and it’s designed to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone, whether you’re an experienced runner, a casual jogger, or someone who simply wants to walk and support a great cause.”

“The route itself is very special. Running in the shadow of the Galtee Mountains and through the Ballyhoura landscape makes this a unique experience, and we’re proud to showcase the beauty of Ballylanders while supporting an important cause.”

“Keeping the entry fee at €10 was very important to us. We wanted to remove barriers to participation while ensuring that every euro raised goes directly to the Irish Cancer Society.”

“We are inviting people from across Limerick and beyond to come to Ballylanders on May 24th for what we hope will be a very special day built on community spirit, remembrance, and hope.”

Organisers are encouraging individuals, families, clubs, and local groups to take part and support the event, which aims to become an annual fixture in the local running calendar.
