Update: Run for Liam fundraiser raises €10,000 (March 9, 2020)

The Run for Liam team team walked and jogged on Sunday, February 28, to raise much-needed funds for the Children’s Grief Centre and commemorate young Liam, who tragically lost his life in August 2018. Katrina Morgan, Children’s Grief Centre Fundraising Co-Coordinator aimed for a target of €7000 was the aim and the virtual virtual event exceeded that raising over €10,000, which will help aid the renovations for a new centre, and potentially do even more, which will be able to facilitate the needs for even more children.

Liam’s legacy, the generous donations and action that was taken by people to run/jog/walk 7km or 7 miles from all over the world will contribute to a fruitful future for childcare development and care in Limerick.

Run for Liam fundraiser for the Children’s Grief Centre

Run for Liam team will be walking/jogging 7km or 7 miles on Sunday, February 28, to raise much-needed funds for the Children’s Grief Centre and commemorate young Liam, who tragically lost his life in August 2018.

“This will be a virtual event, so you can take part in it no matter where in the world you are! Walk/jog/run with your family (or without). Let’s have fun with this and get us motivated in Lockdown 3! Something to aim for and give us all a much-needed boost both mentally and physically! So many of you incredible people were part of the amazing legacy left behind by Liam in 2019. Our Run for Liam’s Campaign raised an unbelievable €127,000 for the Children’s Grief Centre when over 500 of our dearly loved family, friends and colleagues walked and ran (some with buggy’s!) in the Great Limerick Run. Please donate whatever you can and support the Children’s Grief Centre as they begin renovations on a new Centre which will help support even more children and young people,” said Katrina Morgan, Children’s Grief Centre Fundraising Co-Coordinator.

The event is a wonderful way for Liam’s family to remember him on his 7th birthday.

“The Run for Liam event is such a wonderful way for Liam’s family to remember him on his 7th birthday which would have been on February 26 and to continue their support of the Children’s Grief Centre. Liam has left behind a legacy of generosity and love that will help so many other children and their families,” stated Katrina.

In 2019, over 500 people took part in the Great Limerick Run 2019, in honour of Liam and raised a total of €127,258.63. The money was also donated to the Children’s Grief Centre in aid of their New Build Project.

The Children’s Grief Centre, located in Limerick city, is a free support service for children and young people who have experienced a loss through bereavement, separation, or divorce. Founded in 2009, the Centre has since significantly grown, having helped over 1400 children deal with the emotional and mental effects of dealing with a loss.

“Since its foundation in 2009, the Children’s Grief Centre has worked with over 1,400 children. In 2009, I never would have thought that there would be so much demand for its services. The Centre provides one-to-one support for school-aged children and young people affected by loss through death, separation, or divorce. We also offer training to a wide variety of organisations and educational institutions. Our school’s workshop programme was devised to offer support to teachers within the school environment around how best to support children who have experienced loss and grief in their lives,” said Sr Helen Culhane, founder of the Children’s Grief Centre.

“Children are at the heart of all that we do at the Children’s Grief Centre. We have recently been gifted a large building on O’Connell Avenue in Limerick, which will become our new Centre after its renovation. Funding generously donated by the Run for Liam team; family, friends and work colleagues will help to renovate this building and create a permanent home to support children and young people affected by loss,” added Katrina.
