Ruth Negga receives high praise for her performance in Presumed Innocent
New Apple TV+ thriller series Presumed Innocent has been receiving positive reviews as has supporting actor Ruth Negga for her role in the show
Presumed Innocent, the new Apple TV+ thriller series has been receiving positive reviews, in particular for the performance of Limerick-raised actress Ruth Negga.
Based on the 1987 New York Times bestselling novel by Scott Turrow, the eight-episode drama stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Rusty Sabich, a chief deputy prosecutor whose life is thrown into chaos when he becomes the prime suspect in a murder case with Negga acting alongside Gyllenhaal as Barbara Sabich, the protagonist’s wife where she delivers a performance which is being lauded by viewers and film writers.
High praise was received from Biritsh film magazine website, Empire Online, who wrote that Ruth Negga turned “what could have been a thankless and clichéd supporting role” into a complex “three-dimensional human being grappling with the realisation she’s married to the world’s worst husband”.
It wasn’t just the critics who were impressed with the Ethiopian-born actor, with many writing on Twitter giving their praise.
One viewer wrote, “Presumed Innocent was too good. Ruth Negga outacted everybody in that finale I know she got tired,” while another commented, “4 episodes into Presumed Innocent on Apple TV and all I can say is…Ruth Negga is incredible. What a performance!”
Known for some major award nominations, some viewers think the actor will be in line for this performance, one saying, “Ruth Negga, we’ll get you that best supporting actress Emmy nomination for Presumed Innocent (2024),” with another viewer replying, “REAL. She stole the show.”
Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Negga grew up in Limerick having moved there at four years of age, her love of acting brought to Trinity College Dublin where she honed her craft while pursuing drama studies.
The Limerick actress is best known for her roles in Preacher from 2016-2019 and as Mildred Loving in the movie Loving in 2016 a performance for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Negga was also nominated for a Tony Award for BEst Actress in a Play for her role as Lady Macbeth in a 2022 production of Macbeth.
