Ryan’s Supervalu Kilmallock holds a toy drive in aid of the Children’s Ark

Ryan’s Supervalu Kilmallock is holding a toy drive to spread some festive cheer in aid of the Children’s Ark in the University Hospital Limerick this Christmas.

The Children’s Ark in the University Hospital Limerick is the only inpatient facility for sick children in the Mid-West. The Children’s Ark is a purpose-built paediatric unit for children with 49 beds in the Sunshine and Rainbow wards, a high-dependency unit, a cystic fibrosis unit and a Caterpillar day ward. There is also a school for children staying in hospital so that those that are well enough can keep up with their school work.

Ryan’s Supervalu is calling the town of Kilmallock and surrounding areas to donate toys for kids of all ages. They cannot accept teddy bears or old toys for health and safety reasons.

Speaking of the toy drive, Manager of Ryan’s Supervalu Kilmallock Eamon McCarthy said “A member of staff, Aoife McCarthy, was on college placement in the Children’s Ark, UHL and as a result, we decided to run the toy drive in aid of the Ark this year.”

If you cannot pick up a toy, money donations are greatly appreciated and will be used to buy toys, games, DVDs, and books for the children in the unit.

December can be a busy time for the unit with children being treated for respiratory and other winter-related infections and conditions. Everyone who works in the Ark – including the play therapists and teachers; the doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, clerical staff and hygiene attendants – all work hard to make the Christmas experience as magical as possible for these children. All donations would bring festive cheer to the children who do have to spend Christmas in the unit.

Eamon said, “Members of the staff will travel to the Children’s Ark in the University Hospital Limerick to drop off the toys just in time for Christmas”. The collection is in-store until December 14 so come along and donate for this great cause that will help to brighten up a child’s Christmas this year.
