Salesian Secondary College students take top honours at the Junk Kouture World Final in Dublin

Students representing Salesian Secondary College and Limerick at the Junk Kouture World Final in Dublin have been crowned as Junk Kouture World Designer of the Year.

The 16th World Final, held at the Helix theatre in Dublin City University, brought 60 innovative teams from Ireland, UK, France, Italy, USA, and UAE together for the competition which has sustainability at its core.

Students are required to align their creations with at least one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals; bringing designs made entirely from recycled and repurposed materials, from coffee pods to mussel shells.

Flying the flag for Limerick, fifth-year students Lauren O’Neill, Alexandra Giltenane, and Sarah Kinnane from Salesian Secondary College claimed the overall title with their winning clown and circus-inspired design, Carousel Couture.

Following the announcement, Salesian Secondary College shared, “Junk Kouture World Designer of the Year has been won by our fantastically talented students, Lauren O’ Neill, Alex Giltenane and Sarah Kinnane who created the superb Carousel Couture under the guidance of their inspirational teacher Ann Mulcahy!!

“Fending off stiff competition from 60 finalists, they claimed victory tonight in the Helix, Dublin. Massive congratulations to all the team. We are so proud and delighted for you!”

The trio’s achievement marks a major moment for the county on the international stage, impressing a judging panel including creative director Cory Infinite, Irish designer Claire Garvey and Dublin-based visual artist Zeda Onboard.

The school was beaming with pride in their team, adding, “Congratulations to our JK World Champions (also winning the Dublin Prize for best design). This world title showcases our students’ exceptional creativity and commitment to sustainability. It’s testament to the quality of teaching and learning at Salesian Secondary College and reflects our dedication to developing confident, innovative young people. We are so proud and delighted for you!”

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
