A Limerick tattoo studio has welcomed a very special customer after global pop superstar Sam Smith dropped in to have their latest tattoo done.

The multi-award-winning singer visited Sanctuary Tattoo Studio on Thomas Street in the heart of Limerick on Tuesday, August 4, accompanied by their sisters, Lily and Mabel, who also received tattoos during the visit.

The London-born star has a huge international following, with around 14 million followers on Instagram and 17 million subscribers on YouTube, along with millions of additional followers across other social media platforms.

In a post announcing the visit, Sanctuary said staff had spent the previous week “pinching ourselves” before confirming the rumours.

“We had the absolute honour of hosting Sam Smith at the studio on Tuesday,” the studio said.

“They were the most down-to-earth, lovely humans to have in the chair.”

The studio has decided not to reveal details of Smith’s new tattoo out of respect for their privacy, but said the visit was one the team would remember for a long time.

“But the memories are locked in!” Sanctuary said.

“Needless to say, we were all so excited to have the opportunity to have our pictures together. Sam was so nice to indulge us all.”

Sanctuary owner and tattoo artist Adele Potts said she believed Smith had selected the Limerick studio because of its atmosphere and the “vibe we have”.

“Every day I’m thankful to, and so proud of, my amazing team for being a part of bringing my studio vision to life,” she said.

“The whole experience was amazing and I truly am so grateful that my little sanctuary was chosen by them.”

Tributes were also paid to Sanctuary artists Leah Hurley and MooseBearCakes, who carried out the tattoo work on the international star.

The studio has grown from Adele Potts’ work as an individual tattoo artist into a larger business, now home to a number of tattoo artists as well as offering piercing and beauty services.

They have won five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. They also won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance alongside Kim Petras for their hit Unholy.

Smith co-wrote and performed Writing’s on the Wall, the theme song for the James Bond film Spectre, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2016. The song also won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Their 2014 breakthrough hit Stay With Me became a worldwide success and helped establish Smith as one of the biggest stars in popular music.

Smith publicly came out as non-binary in 2019 and uses they/them pronouns.
