Patient Sandra Cronin’s €27,000 Fundraiser Leaves Lasting Legacy at Mid Western Cancer Centre

Patient Sandra Cronin has commissioned a symbolic artwork by Limerick artist Clare Hartigan to Thank Mid Western Cancer Centre Staff

A patient undergoing treatment at the Mid Western Cancer Centre has expressed her gratitude to the oncology team by commissioning a specially created painting that now takes pride of place in the centre’s waiting area, offering comfort and hope to patients and their families.

Sandra Cronin, from Bruff, Co Limerick, raised an impressive €27,000 in support of breast cancer and oncology services at University Hospital Limerick (UHL). A portion of the funds raised was used to commission the artwork from local artist Clare Hartigan, while the remainder will support the ongoing development of cancer services at the hospital.

Sandra said the remarkable fundraising total reflected the generosity of everyone who supported her efforts and highlighted the importance of having high-quality cancer care available close to home.

“The total raised shows the generosity of family, friends and the wider community, and also how important these services are in the region,” she said.

The painting, titled The Boreen, has been installed in the waiting area of the Mid Western Cancer Centre, where it serves as a lasting tribute to the dedication, compassion and professionalism of the oncology staff who care for patients every day. Inspired by the experience of living with and receiving treatment for cancer, the artwork symbolises the journey patients undertake, acknowledging both its challenges and the hope that accompanies every step forward.

Created by Clare Hartigan, The Boreen depicts a winding country lane, a familiar feature of the Irish landscape, representing the twists, turns and uncertainties that can accompany a cancer diagnosis. At the same time, it conveys resilience, strength and the promise of brighter days ahead, making it a fitting addition to a space where patients and their loved ones spend time while attending appointments and treatment.

The Mid Western Cancer Centre, based at University Hospital Limerick, is the designated cancer centre for the Mid-West and provides specialist medical oncology and haematology services to patients from Limerick, Clare, North Tipperary and surrounding counties. The centre delivers chemotherapy, systemic anti-cancer treatments, outpatient clinics and supportive care, enabling thousands of patients each year to access specialist treatment closer to home. Alongside expert clinical care, the centre places a strong emphasis on creating a welcoming environment that supports the emotional wellbeing of patients and their families.

Sandra said commissioning the painting was a meaningful way to recognise the exceptional care, kindness and encouragement she has received throughout her treatment. She hopes the artwork will offer reassurance and a sense of calm to others who are beginning or continuing their own cancer journey.

The installation of The Boreen stands as a lasting legacy of community generosity and patient gratitude. It celebrates the dedication of the staff at the Mid Western Cancer Centre while providing an enduring symbol of hope, resilience and compassion for everyone who walks through its doors.
