People whose lives are being dragged from them by addiction are sometimes painfully aware of what is happening and many others are still in fear and asking “do I have a problem?”

Whichever is the case, Saoirse Addiction Treatment Centre is opening the doors at its new city home this coming Monday, September 30, for an informal day to celebrate International  Recovery Day.

People with personal concerns, concerns about a friend or family member or students and health-care professionals interested in addiction or related studies can come to the new Clare Street Centre, which opened in June thanks to funding from the JP McManus Benevolent Fund.

A non-residential, free and confidential, treatment service for people addicted to alcohol, drugs and gambling in the Midwest, Saoirse is now offering a HSE approved pilot programme for the treatment of people addicted to gaming aged 14 years and over.

The service started on a shoestring 12 years ago and has helped almost 5,000 people in the Mid West to tackle their addiction problem.

The centre offers screening, structured harm reduction and abstinence and after care programme.

They also offer support and counselling for families and those affected by a loved one’s addiction.

Manager, Alan Galvin, said the open day is “a way for people to explore the options. The emphasis is on recovery rather than the problem and we will welcome anyone who has questions”.

“Recovery is absolutely possible and we want to make that possibility available to as many people who are struggling as we can. Even if someone wants to just find out what addiction treatment with Saoirse entails, for themselves or for a loved one, they are welcome to come and meet staff and ask any questions they have.”  

The centre at Old Clare Street – V94X4X9 – will be open between 9.30am and 1pm. Anyone who can’t make it on the open day can contact Saoirse
