Three transition year students, from Scoil Pol, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick are hoping to be accepted into this year’s BT Young Scientist competition with an innovative and fun project about how social media can be used for social good.

In doing so they are raising funds for Cliona’s Foundation and at the same time keeping alive the memory of Sarah Crowe. Cliona’s Foundation is a local charity that uniquely provides financial assistance for families of children with a life limiting illness all over Ireland. i

Sarah Crowe from Kilfinane, Co. Limerick sadly passed away in March of this year at only twelve years of age. She was the oldest living person with ‘Alpers’ disease which she bravely fought for 9 years. This challenge was started by the students as they wanted to keep her memory alive by encouraging others to live life to the full.

They have devised a challenge similar to the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ called ‘#starforsarah’.  To take part in the challenge,  they are asking people to take a photo of themselves jumping for joy in the shape of a star or a selfie along with a star emoji  and upload it on Facebook while using ‘#starforsarah’. Then nominate 3-5 people to do the same and text ‘Cliona’ to 50300 to donate €2. This fantastic challenge is gathering momentum so far and will continue to raise money for Cliona’s Foundation  and keep the memory of the beautiful Sarah Crowe alive with the help of those who take part in ‘#starforsarah’.

The BT Young Scientist competition see’s thousand of applicants from all over the country compete each year and we wish all the best for these Limerick girls and their wonderful initiative.
