Limerick athlete Sarah Lavin has reached the World Indoor Championship qualification standard this past weekend with a strong performance at the World Indoor Tour Silver Meeting de Paris.

The Emerald AC hurdler had a great showing in both rounds of the 60 metre hurdle on Sunday, January 25.

Lavin’s final run earned her a second-place finish, with a time of 7.98, finishing narrowly behind French runner Laeticia Bapte, who finished strong, clocking a time of 7.92.

The performance for the Limerick runner means she has delivered World Indoor Championships qualification and will represent Ireland in Toruń, Poland, at the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena Toruń, with the championships set to take place from March 20 – 22.

Following the performance, Athletics Ireland said, “World indoor Q for Sarah Lavin who clocks 7.98 (2nd) in the final of the women’s 60mH at the Meeting de Paris. The Emerald AC athlete following up on her season opener of 8.02 earlier in the schedule.”

Lavin joins other Irish athletes who had top performances this weekend reaching the qualifying standard and booking a spot at the World Indoor Championships.

Dublin’s Andrew Coscoran secured an ‘A’ standard with a second-place finish in the 3000m in Boston, clocking 7:30.97, while Nick Griggs also qualified, finishing fourth, setting a new Irish under-23 record of 7:31.79.

Cian McPhillips impressed with victory in the 600m, while Bori Akinola claimed a ‘B’ standard over 60m. Lauren Roy and Diarmuid O’Connor also delivered record-breaking performances.  

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online.
