Limerick athletes Sarah Lavin and Ciara Neville were part of the Irish Women’s 4x100m relay team, which set a new national record at Saturday’s Diamond League meeting in London.

The relay team, made up of Sarah Leahy of Killarney Valley AC, Neville of Emerald AC, Lauren Roy of City of Lisburn AC, and Lavin of Emerald AC, put on a show for supporters at last weekend’s meeting with a time of 43.73 seconds, eclipsing the 2018 record which was 43.80 seconds.

The team finished fourth in what was a thrilling race, which saw the Irish team finish in fourth place, with Great Britain coming out as winners. Racing together for just the second time, the team will grow in confidence as they set their eyes on a visit to Birmingham next August for the European Athletics Championships.

Following the race, Athletics Ireland shared the news in an updated on social media, saying, “Our Women’s 4x100m Relay team of Sarah Leahy, Lauren Roy, Ciara Neville and Sarah Lavin clock 43.73 to break the 2018 Irish senior record (43.80) at the London Diamond League. The team finish fourth in a thrilling race.”

It was an impressive outing for Irish athletes at the meeting in London, which saw Sarah Healy of UCD AC finish third in the Women’s Mile, crossing the line in a time of 4:16.26, edging her closer to Ciara Mageean’s top spot on the Irish all-time list.

Tallaght AC’s Rhasidat Adeleke set a season’s best of 22.52 seconds while placing fourth in the Women’s 200m behind her training partners Julien Alfred and Dina Asher-Smith.
