Lavin, placed 17th in the world rankings coming into this year’s Summer Olympics, finished ahead of world number six, Ditaji Kambundji who won silver at the European Championships in June.

The three semi-finals will take place on Friday, August 9 with the first race scheduled for 11:05 am.

In the build-up to this year’s Olympic Games, Lavin has experienced success having broken the long-standing national record in August 2023 at the World Athletics Championships representing Ireland in Budapest with a time of 12.62 seconds.

This year’s Olympics has already been an incredible experience for the Lisnagry hurdler who had the honour of leading Ireland in the opening ceremony alongside golfer, Shane Lowry.

The occasion of carrying the flag and representing Ireland was described as “the greatest honour” by Lavin, she said, “It’s surreal to be honest with you, the greatest honour I’ve ever been given, and I would even go so far as to say probably any Olympic athlete ever could be given to carry the country’s flag.”

“It’s just something you can’t prepare for. I’m so grateful to those who’ve trusted me and put me in this position.”

I Love Limerick wishes Sarah the best of luck in her up-coming semi final!
