Sarah McTernan has released her new pop/dance single ‘Close My Eyes’ and it already reached No.1 on iTunes! Sarah wrote it with two talented musicians/songwriters from Belfast, Emma Horan, and Jonny Fitch.

Sarah, commenting on the single, said, “My single ‘Close My Eyes’ is a special one for me. It was written after my grandmother passed away, and it’s about the heartache that was felt (and still is felt) after her passing. It’s entirely dedicated to her, Margaret McTernan.”

Sarah wrote the song in dedication to her Grandmother Margaret McTernan who was a huge inspiration to her.

Margaret McTernan was a massive inspiration to Sarah. Sarah adds, “It was a week or so after my Nana passed away. I was feeling a bit lost. This was in June last year in the middle of the pandemic. I said to my mother how I felt, and she replied saying “ask Nana for help, pray to her.”

Almost instantly Sarah remembered a conversation with her Grandaunt from the funeral who said,  “the last time I was speaking to your grandmother she told me you were writing music and how proud she was of you”.

Her words kept repeating in Sarahs head and Sarah, “instantly lost any self-doubt I had and truly saw my path.”

She added, “This life is meant to be lived; there is no point in weighing yourself down with doubt or fear. Losing someone so close to you totally changes your perspective, and you start to realise how precious life is. I think that was a pivotal moment in my life, and since then, I have been writing and working hard on my career.”

Sarah has found writing music during the pandemic to be a really great experience. She said, “I’ve written/co-written quite a few songs, but to be honest, the pandemic is what kicked me into shape. It has forced me (in the most magical way) towards doing what I love. I’m focused and motivated. So, I guess I have that to be thankful for. I’m accustomed to writing during the pandemic, and I’m very grateful for the people around that I have to bounce ideas off of and to write with.”

Sarah is a 27-year-old singer-songwriter from Scariff, County Clare. Sarah is an only child and has a beautiful daughter Mia who also loves to sing. After graduating from secondary school in 2011, Sarah took a pre-nursing course in Ennis, County Clare. Sarah has close ties to Limerick as she then went on to study Music Technology at Limerick Institute of Technology after which she took a break from education and worked in retail.

Sarah came third in the series four of ‘The Voice of Ireland’ in April 2015. At her blind audition, she sang ‘Who You Are’ and all four judges turned their chairs. Her coach and mentor was Rachel Stevens of S Club 7 fame. Sarah went on to represent Ireland in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest.

Sarah shares her advice with new and upcoming musicians, saying, “If I had any advice it would be, just be yourself! Keep focused and ditch the fear! Believe in yourself and always work on your talent (songwriting, singing, performing, producing). Keep busy with something whether it’s cover gigs or writing and connect with like-minded people!”

Acknowledging again the huge impact her grandmother had on her career she said, “I’m very lucky to have such supportive friends and family but there was nobody that believed in me more than my grandmother. She’s my inspiration and I can feel her guiding me every day.”

I Love Limerick look forward to hearing Sarah’s upcoming new and exciting music!
