The Limerick Festival of Science will take place as part of Science Week 2021 this year, running from Sunday, November 7 to Sunday, November 14.

All events are free, and there is something for everyone to enjoy, both in person and online.

This year’s festival features a range of scientists and engineers from various backgrounds, ages, and disciplines. A variety of virtual interactive talks, workshops, quizzes, and more will be taking place all over Limerick city and county during the week of the festival.

Examples of some of the events taking place online for the Limerick Festival of Science include Smart Technology in Art, which is two exhibitions allowing participants to explore how SMART technology is being used to create art, which runs from Tuesday, November 9 to Friday, November 12, and Science of Sleep, which is an online seminar where a sleep expert discusses the science of sleep and tells you how to improve your sleep quality, taking place on Monday, November 8.

To celebrate the role of science in the lives of people in the Mid-West region, the University of Limerick, Mary Immaculate College and Limerick Institute of Technology have teamed up to present a range of activities and experiences all about science, and hope to share their enthusiasm for science, technology engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) with everyone attending.

Professor Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of Ireland said, “Science Week has been such an important week in our calendar for over two decades and I am delighted to see it growing every year. Covid-19 has been an incredible challenge for everyone, but we have seen the best of what science and research has to offer in providing solutions and creating a better future for us all.

“I am delighted to say that Irish scientists, doctors and researchers have played a fundamental role throughout the pandemic. As we move out of the pandemic and really think about the future that we want for ourselves and future generations, we all have an opportunity to have our voice heard through the government’s Creating Our Future campaign. I would encourage the people submit their ideas to the platform as well as engaging with Science Week through our events and digital activity; there really is something for everyone.”

Science Week brings everyone together from children and adults, to scientists, engineers and technologists. It is designed to spark curiosity, inspire imagination and unleash the potential that can help shape the future. The festival aims to challenge stereotypes so young people can see the diversity of people that work in STEAM.

Science Week 2021also aims to give the public inspiration for the government’s‘ Creating Our Future’ campaign by providing an opportunity to discuss and explore how science can contribute to a better future.

The ‘Creating Our Future’ campaign is a conversation between the people of Ireland, to gather ideas on problems you’d like researched and innovation to deal with, to create a better future for all. 

An expert panel collects ideas submitted and considers them, before creating a report based on the suggestions and topics inspired by the national conversation. Researchers will then be able to consider the public’s ideas and topics in their current research

Submissions to the campaign will run until the end of November.
