The Cycle Right training programme, part of the Travel Scheme Green Schools renewal, is an initiative designed to equip young cyclists with essential road skills and confidence.
The programme, which recently took place at the school, saw 4th Class students participate in a series of engaging and practical lessons. Under the guidance of certified Cycle Right instructors, pupils learned about road positioning, hand signals, bike maintenance, and the importance of wearing high-visibility clothing and helmets.
Cycle Right is Ireland’s national standard for cycle training, supported by the Road Safety Authority, An Taisce Green-Schools, and Sport Ireland. It aims to instil responsible cycling habits and promote active travel among children. Green schools Travel theme encourages sustainable travel such as walking, cycling, and public transport to reduce carbon emissions. “Cycling is a fantastic way for children to stay active while also learning vital road safety skills. We are delighted at Scoil Fhionáin to offer this training as part of our commitment to student well-being and road awareness.”
The Cycle Right training is a perfect complement to Scoil Fhionáin’s ongoing efforts in promoting sustainable travel. This week, the green schools committee along with students from 1st Class produced a video as part of the Big Travel Challenge, encouraging their peers to walk or cycle to school safely.
Parents and teachers alike have applauded the initiative, noting the increased confidence and awareness displayed by students. One parent said, “It’s wonderful to see them mastering these skills at a young age. It makes a real difference in their safety and independence.”
With Scoil Fhionáin’s commitment to fostering responsible cyclists, the future looks bright – and safer – for the next generation of road users.
