Scoil Pol TY Student promote recycling creativity 

Transition Year students from Scoil Pol, Kilfinane worked together with Ballyhoura Development to collect all of the materials, including water bottles from around the school, plastic sheeting, flipflops, plastic bags, plastic netting and clingfilm. The students decided to make a turtle out of the plastics they had collected, to highlight the fact that turtles are one of the worst affected by single-use plastics. Following on from this workshop, Scoil Pol committed to offering personalized, reusable water bottles to their students to reduce the amount of waste produced. The students’ sculpture was displayed by Ballyhoura Beo at this year’s Wellfest Festival in Dublin, on the 11th and 12th of May.

Abbey O’Toole, a TY student from Scoil Pol spoke on her involvement in the project: “We really enjoyed this project, we now understand the importance of protecting the environment and saving the turtles and marine life.”

Scoil Pól is a small rural secondary school in Kilfinane, Co. Limerick with Christian values and ideals. The school consisting of 1500 students with a 60:40 female to male ratio and a qualified, dedicated teaching staff. Scoil Pól promotes inclusion, respect and care within students who are encouraged to work to the best of their abilities.  They encourage their students to show awareness and acceptance for others. They promise all incoming student support with the change from primary to secondary school, supervised study after school and extra-curricular activities. Both Physical and Academic Education are encouraged.  

Ballyhoura Development is a community-led local development company, working to support communities, families, individuals and business. Structured as a non-profit company, with charitable status, Ballyhoura Development is a partnership of the community and voluntary sector, social partners, local government and statutory agencies.
