Mr Murphy served as Assistant County Manager from 1976 to 1988, before taking on the County Manager role for four years, until 1992.

Mayor of Limerick City and County, Daniel Butler, was among those to pay tribute to Mr Murphy, saying, “On behalf of myself, the staff and former staff of Limerick City and County Council and the people of Limerick, I would like to offer my sympathies to Sean’s family and friends on his passing, especially to his wife Muiread, daughter Catherine and sons John, Declan and Alan.

“Sean was a gentleman who worked tirelessly for the people of County Limerick. He may have retired from the organisation in 1992, but there are still people working with us who remember him as a quiet but determined man, a man of great character and integrity.”

Mr Murphy’s notable work includes overseeing the N21 Newcastle West to Abbeyfeale and the Plassey Park Road developments, establishing the Roads Design Team, orchestrating an organisational review by the Institute of Public Administration, and setting up a consultative forum for Limerick County Council staff.

Before joining Limerick County Council in 1966, the Tipperary-born man worked as an engineer for Dublin Corporation, Tipperary North County Council, Waterford Corporation and Dun Laoghaire Corporation.

When not at work, Mr Murphy could be found on the greens of Lahinch and Castletroy Golf Club. He served as captain, president and trustee of Lahinch Golf Club for a time, positions also held by former President of Ireland, Patrick Hillary.

The Castletroy man is survived by his loving wife Muiread, children John, Catherine, Declan & Alan, daughters-in-law Breda, Anna & Shaza, Catherine’s partner John, grandchildren Megan, Eoin, Cathal, Carmen, Luisa, Julian, Juliette & Djibriel, and sisters Maureen O’Neill (Boher) & Joan Clohosey (Cork).

Mr Murphy will repose at Griffin’s Funeral Home, John’s Gate on Wednesday, December 15 from 5 – 6:30 pm, before a Requiem Mass in Mary Magdalene Church, Monaleen on Thursday, December 16 at midday.
