211024 Shannon Airport has proudly joined the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative to support more than half a million people in Ireland living with non-visible disabilities. Passengers travelling through Shannon Airport can now avail of a free Sunflower lanyard to indicate that they have a non-visible disability and would appreciate an offer of support. The airport team and the wider airport community underwent specialist training to recognise the Sunflower and provide time, understanding and assistance to those wearing it. Shannon Airport has become the first organisation in Ireland to introduce tapitags to raise awareness of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme. The airport has introduced 15 tapitag points at locations throughout the terminal building where people can scan a QR code on their phone to learn more about the programme and other supports available at the airport. No Repro Fee Mary Considine, CEO of The Shannon Airport Group has welcomed today’s announcement at Shannon Airport by James Lawless TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, of a new Regional State Airports Sustainability Programme with a capital budget of €4.225m to support Shannon and Cork airports sustainability plans. The newly appointed Minister was in Shannon for his first visit to the Airport since his appointment as Minister of State at the Department of Transport on 27th June 2024. During his visit, Minister Lawless toured Shannon Airport and got to see first-hand the ease of using Shannon and the many world firsts and innovative initiatives for which the airport is known. These include being recognised by the World Health Organisation as one of the world’s first Age Friendly airports; being the first airport in the world outside the Americas to introduce full US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) preclearance facilities; being home to the world’s first duty free; and being the first airport in Europe to open a Sensory room.
