A second Limerick Rainbow crossing has been unveiled in Limerick in as many months by the Council’s Active Travel team. The new crossing on the Dooradoyle Road, next to the Ballykeefe Roundabout, stretches across both the outbound and inbound lanes.

Given its prominent position next to the Crescent Shopping Centre, the new crossing will be seen by thousands of people every day. It comes just six weeks after the installation of Limerick’s first Pride Rainbow crossing on Bridge Street in the city centre.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Daniel Butler said: “I was heartened to see the positive feedback to our first Pride Rainbow crossing on Bridge Street next to Merchant’s Quay. A number of people asked at the time why we were doing it. For me, this is about celebrating Limerick’s diversity and it sends a message to our LGBTQ+ community that Limerick is an inclusive place to live and work.”

Lisa Daly, Chairperson of Limerick Pride who originated the idea for a Rainbow Crossing in Limerick said: “We are really excited to have worked with Limerick City & County Council behind the scenes with some ideas this year, with the first rainbow crossing in Limerick near Merchants Quay where our pride parade gathers and now another added in the county in Dooradoyle.

I know there are plenty of rainbow walks in the country but I believe Limerick could be the first in the country to have not one but two rainbow crossings which is great to see how far we have come.

This crossing is in a great location as it connects to the Limerick City County Council building and is next to the Crescent Shopping Centre which will be seen by many from the county showing the solidarity and inclusivity of our council towards LGBTQIA as an overall county.

This wasn’t an idea that happened overnight, different designs have been investigated for five years. During the planning and research process for this year, it was decided that this design was best suited. The design would be to place the lines at either side of the crossing away from the original white and black crossing. The design was done as a rainbow as to not distract guide dogs with the triangle shape, while also adding extra visibility to drivers, we wanted to insure it was as safe as possible for all.

This is a great moment for our community and county with Limerick showing equality for all, which I’m personally proud to see happening and hope it brings as much joy to others.

Thanks to Mayor Daniel Butler and to the Limerick Active Travel team for working closely with Limerick Pride in helping to make these moments happen.

We are very excited to have a physical Parade this year and welcome everyone in Limerick to come out and fly their colours in support of Pride in Limerick July 4th-10th with our parade taking place Saturday 9th.”

The Limerick Pride committee is now accepting registrations for groups for this year’s Limerick Pride 2022 parade. The Limerick Pride 2022 parade will take place on Saturday, July 9, when the parade will gather at Merchants Quay at 12.50 pm and leave at 2.15 pm promptly, following the route up O’Connell Street and back to the Hunt Museum for the annual Pridefest event.

International drag queen, drag race alumni, and Celebrity Big Brother UK winner, Courtney Act has also been announced to headline the Climax Party in Dolans which takes place the evening of Saturday, July 9.
