Na Piarsaigh celebrate the achievement of “star of the week” All-Ireland-winning captain Shane Waters

Na Piarsaigh are celebrating the achievement of Limerick All-Ireland-winning Minor Hurling captain, Shane Waters, following the historic win over Tipperary on Saturday, June 27

Na Piarsaigh are celebrating the achievement of All-Ireland Minor Hurling champion Shane Waters, who captained the Treaty to winning the competition for the first time in 42 years.

Waters captained the side throughout the campaign, which saw the minor team bounce back following a Munster final defeat to Tipperary earlier to claim the Irish Press Cup with an impressive victory which saw the hurlers come from behind late on.

The Na Piarsaigh man raised the cup at the end of what was an entertaining game, marking a historic moment for Limerick, celebrating their first Minor All-Ireland Championship win in more than four decades.

Limerick entered the game as underdogs, but came out on top with a 2-12 to 1-14 win over The Premier County thanks to an amazing late goal from substitute Gavin O’Brien, which saw the Treaty men draw level, followed by a game-winning point from John Ross O’Reilly, who also made an appearance off the bench.

Celebrating Shane Waters’ achievement, Na Piarsaigh said, “The win of the week, and without doubt the star of the week, are our incredible Limerick Minor hurlers: management and players. An All-Ireland title is immense, and leading them with real class was our own Shane Waters.

“What a day last Saturday was in the Gaelic Grounds. What a game, and the atmosphere was electric. A superb captain throughout the campaign from start to finish, and now the first All-Ireland winning Limerick captain in Na Piarsaigh.”

The club used the opportunity to praise the commitment of Shane’s family, adding, “Leadership runs deep in the Waters family. Shane’s parents, Sarah and Martin, have long been central to so much in the club (Pitches, coaching, Bord na nÓg and more), as have the wider Waters and Brougham family.

“Shane’s success is a proud testament to them, to his coaches and to every mentor who helped shape his journey. A proud day for Limerick Hurling, for Shane, his family and our club.”

The Limerick Senior Hurlers will now go in search of glory of their own as they look forward to an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Semi-Final against fellow Munster rivals, Clare, this Sunday, July 5, in Croke Park.
