Historian Sharon Slater honoured with Mayoral Reception

Historian Sharon Slater was recognised with a mayoral reception for her work to immortalize and promote Limerick’s history. Councillor Sean Lynch, Mayor of the Metropolitan District of Limerick hosted the reception on Wednesday, June 12 in Limerick Council Chamber.
An Award-wining historian, Slater has spent years researching the history of Limerick. She has written numerous books including ‘A Stitch in Time – A History of Limerick’s Clothing Factory’, ‘Limerick in Old Photographs’ and ‘The Little Book of Limerick’. In 2004, Slater launched Limerick’s Life, where Slater posts articles telling the untold stories on Limerick’s people and places.
Speaking at the Mayoral reception, Cllr Sean Lynch said, “It is an honour and privilege to host this mayoral reception for Sharon for keeping the history of limerick alive. Enthusiasm moves the world, and Sharon has this in abundance”.
Speaking to ilovelimerick, Slater said, “I was very surprised to find out I was getting a mayoral reception. After working for so long on history in Limerick, it’s wonderful to see the history of Limerick getting some recognition”.
Slater’s Mayoral Reception comes following her work being honoured with the Heritage Council’s Heritage Hero Award, which celebrates someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the protection and promotion of heritage in Ireland. Out of a list of 122 entries, Sharon Slater was honoured with the award. She received the accolade at the Medieval Mile Museum for her amazing contribution to protecting and promoting the heritage in Ireland.
Sharon Slater was also honoured in November 2015 with the Limerick Person of the Month Award for her work on Limerick’s Life, as well as aiding social engagement in local history.
