Limerick singer-songwriter Shona Cassidy is set to release her debut single, ‘Persephone’, this August 16th.
Hailing from Limerick, Shona first came into contact with music-making at her grandmother’s house where she became utterly captivated by the piano’s ability to weave a sonic story.
Shona’s ‘Persephone’ features a hauntingly melodic piano complimented by the Limerick singer’s powerful voice. The stripped-back composition of the song makes it impossible to not focus on every element of the song, from the patterns of the keys to the lyrics, you find yourself in a state of reflection.
Over the years, her strong interest in both music and literature helped her to hone her skills in storytelling, ultimately graduating with a BA degree in Music and English and later an MA in Creative Music Technologies.
Highly metaphorical in nature, Shona’s lyrics are particularly influenced by strong female voices such as Stevie Nicks, Taylor Swift, and Virginia Woolf.
By engaging in an indie-folk style, her musical accompaniments largely utilise the atmospheric nature of acoustic instruments to create an ethereal space for her lyrics to inhabit.
In 2022 Shona was awarded a prestigious music award for the thesis she completed as part of her undergraduate study at MIC.
Graduating in October 2021 with a BA in Music and English, Shona was awarded First Prize in the Council of Heads of Music in Higher Education (CNMHE) Undergraduate Musicology Competition for the thesis on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, ‘Phantom of the Opera’. The competition sees Higher Education music departments from around the island of Ireland nominating an undergraduate dissertation for the annual prize.
