Culture Night 2016 to showcase cultural offering in Limerick

A feast for all the senses is promised for this year’s Culture Night 2016 in Limerick.

One hundred events will be taking place between 5.00pm and 11.00pm on Friday 16 September across the city and county.

Culture Night 2016 is one of the most popular nights of celebration in Limerick bringing everyone together under a unified sense of belonging.  Culture is embedded as part of the profile of Limerick for many decades and it is as multiple and diverse as its citizens and landscape.

Limerick’s Culture Night 2016 is divided into six themes: Heritage; Children and Family; Art and Design; Theatre and Film; Poetry and Writing; Music and Dance.

From Pinch Pot Constructions and Ceramic Throwing to a Guided Tour of the Book of Kells or Walking the Medieval Walls there is something for everyone of all ages.  And when you get peckish there is an International Cuisine exhibit, experience Four Markets in One or you can Park-up & Picnic!

Sheila Deegan, Arts and Culture Officer with Limerick City and County Council said: “I love the energy of Culture Night with friends and families seeking out events and happenings in usual and unusual spaces.  The 100 events being provided this year is a credit to individual cultural practitioners and organisations who throw open their doors for late night opening for one night only.  Don’t let the opportunity pass you by to hear music, watch a movie, listen to poetry and prose or just dance.”

“I’m calling on everyone to use the hashtag #weareculture to showcase what we have to offer,” she added.

Culture Night is looking to recruit some volunteers to help out on the night.

Karen Fitzgibbon is Volunteer Co-ordinator: “We are looking for volunteers for Culture Night 2016!  Culture Night plays an integral part in our city and county each year when Arts and Cultural organisations open their doors until late with hundreds of free events, tours, talks and performances for you, your family and friends to enjoy.  If you would like to be a part of it then sign up as a volunteer and enjoy the fun!  So get involved!”

There are 100 events to choose from.  All events are FREE but some venues may require advance booking.

Culture Night is brought to you by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs in partnership with regional arts offices, local authorities and cultural organisations throughout the island of Ireland.

Events are taking place at various locations across the city and the county.
