The Mid West Simon Community event ‘Simon Week 2018’ will take place from October 1 – 7. Simon Week 2018 is a national awareness campaign currently in its eleventh year, which seeks to raise awareness of homelessness and the people supported by the Simon Community.

There will be events and activities taking place all around the country at a local, regional and national level. This year, Simon’s campaign message is ‘Homelessness is not normal – let’s start a Big Conversation with Government about housing and homelessness.’ Panti Bliss and Jennifer Maguire have generously given up their time for this year’s campaign video which you can find on the Mid West Simon website and social media. Anyone wishing to sign the petition can do so here also.

Mid West Simon’s highlight event, Street Beat’s, a lively mini street festival, will take place, Thursday, October 4  on Little Catherine St. Limerick between 11 am and 8 pm. This free event welcomes the public to come along and enjoy a wide variety of music, poetry and spoken word performances, as well as face painting.

Artists and bands performing on the day include; Julianna Hennelly, The Fake McCoys, Fergal Nash, Dominic Taylor, Keith, Jason Hinchey, Betsy Walsh, Damien O’Rourke, Larry De Cleir, and Louise O’Flanagan.

Louise O’Flanagan is an Irish singer-songwriter, pianist, guitarist, and composer. Born in Limerick City, Louise’s music is emotionally thought to provoke and its raw power yanks and tears at the heartstrings. Energy surges upon her melodic wavelengths. Louise said, “I’m feeling very grateful to be supporting the Simon Community through Music & Song.  My heart is my home and where my fears are most at rest. It would be an honour to offer my heart as a home to the homeless through my Music & Song.”

Singer-songwriter Keith started playing music at 15 years old as a drummer in a rock band, playing covers and originals and added, “I am pleased to be able to support the Simon Community, which does sterling work to assist the homeless and focus awareness on the associated problems and possible solutions. I have been homeless myself several times down the years.”

Fergal Nash is a rock singer/songwriter from Kilcornan, specialising in up-tempo guitar anthems and acoustic ballads. Fergal commented, “Homelessness is a scourge on our society and I am delighted to lend my hand to the Simon Community by performing at this event and helping their efforts to raise awareness and seek immediate government intervention to deal with this crisis!”
