On Saturday June 7th St Mary’s Cathedral will ring out to the sounds of Limerick’s newest orchestra.  Limerick Sinfonia, an initiative of teachers at Limerick School of Music, is a new orchestra featuring professional musicians which will provide a platform for established and developing performers to feature in concertos and other orchestral works.

The orchestra, led by Limerick violinist Anna Jane Ryan and under the direction of John Davis, will present an exciting programme.  The evening will include two major keyboard concertos, the Mozart piano concerto No. 21, better known as “Elvira Madigan” with soloist Stuart O’Sullivan and the Poulenc Concerto for Organ, Strings & Timpani with soloist Trevor Selby.

The evening will also feature the world premiere of “Fanfare for Limerick” a new work for organ, piano and orchestra written by Trevor Selby especially for this occasion.  Gounod’s Petite Symphonie for Wind Ensemble and the Adagio for Organ and Strings by Albinoni will complete the programme.

Conductor John Davis stated: “This is an exciting new development for the Mid-West region and we hope that thiswill be the beginning of a great new era in Limerick’s musical life”.  Principal of Limerick School of Music, Mr David O’Connell, commented: “This is a very positive addition to Limerick’s vibrant music scene and it is fitting that Limerick Sinfonia is making its debut in the year that Limerick is designated National City of Culture”.

This promises to be a memorable event and the first of many performances by this new ensemble. The concert takes place at St Mary’s Cathedral Limerick at 7.30pm on Saturday 7th June. Tickets are available at UCH Box Office, tel. 061 331549 www.uch.ie
