Sing Out With Strings

The Irish Chamber Orchestra’s Sing Out with Strings programme celebrated its 5th birthday, in true party style with a Gala concert at University Concert Hall on Limerick on June 21. 300 children aged 4-14 years from four city schools – Galvone National School, Southill Junior School, St. Enda’s Community School and St Mary’s Boys School came together and performed with members of the Irish Chamber Orchestra. Special guest artists including renowned percussionist Noel Eccles, rock guitarist Jimmy Smith, jazz pianist Boris Hunka and celebrated saxophonist, Ken Edge added colour to the day.

This year, they invited local schools to come along and participate in Express Yourself! All participating schools were asked to learn a song by Emeli Sande which they performed together as part of a grand Finale. Express Yourself, showcased the children’s performance of orchestral works and original songs, while exploring how music impacts on their feelings, thinking and creativity! Since its inception, Sing Out with Strings has gained a reputation for its joyous, uplifting and inspirational performances.

Sing Out with Strings works to develop strong musical ability, but with an added emphasis on the transferrable skills that will help children in other areas of the curriculum and throughout their lives as they grow. Through workshops, rehearsals and performances, children explore their abilities as musicians and gain that sense of pure joy and achievement that comes from working and playing together. Inspired by Venezuela’s El Sistema, Sing Out with Strings brings music directly into the culture of the school, encouraging children to develop personally, socially and academically through music. It also allows these children to meet, engage with and learn from professional musicians and artists. Sing Out highlights the many benefits that a long-term project of this nature offers to children, staff, parents and the wider community. Bring your pupils and join the Irish Chamber Orchestra with the Sing Out with Strings team for a performance to remember! The Irish Chamber Orchestra is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
