1. What was your first introduction to electronic music and what drew you to the harder styles like industrial and rawstyle?

Electronic music has always been around me growing up, from trance to house, but everything changed when I started building gym playlists full of hardstyle. That was my first real pull into the heavier side of electronic music. When I discovered techno, it completely consumed me.

The rich, heavy bass resonated with me in a way nothing else did, and I found myself drawn deeper and deeper into it. Then, in 2023, I discovered hard techno, which catapulted my obsession to a whole new level and made me want to start mixing myself.

2. Tell us about growing up in Limerick and how that impacted your musical taste.

Growing up in Limerick had a huge influence on my musical taste. The nightlife and party culture is wild; there’s something for absolutely everyone. A lot of my friends were into techno, and more underground genres and being surrounded by that scene shaped my own taste massively. I was completely in my element within that environment.

Skulhane says he is “driven by the vision I have for where I want to go”.

3. How do you prepare for your sets?

If I have plenty of notice, I’ll spend a lot of time crafting something I really want to showcase. I’m a perfectionist; everything needs to be intentional and top-tier. At the same time, I can adapt quickly when needed. My most recent set, a two-hour slot in Pharmacia Limerick on short notice, ended up being one of my best ever. So while I’m meticulous, I also embrace the moment and trust my instincts.

4. Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I’ve drawn inspiration from many Irish artists like BLK Kettama, Black Traffic, the list goes on and collectives such as Reboot Events/Outset, who are reshaping the Irish scene. But more than anything, now my biggest inspiration is myself. I’m driven by the vision I have for where I want to go. I can see the horizon, and watching those visions come to life is what keeps me pushing forward every day. I have no idea how long that will take, and that’s okay, it’s been an amazing journey so far and is only getting better.

5. How do you see the Irish electronic music scene evolving?

The Irish electronic scene is evolving incredibly fast; it feels like it’s taking over. You’ve got Irish artists blowing up internationally, playing massive festivals and making serious moves. At the same time, the underground scene is deeper and more diverse than ever. There’s something for everyone, and the younger crowds are keeping the scene alive with unbelievable passion. Ireland is becoming a real force in electronic music.

6. What did earning your residency with Electronic Party Ireland mean to you?

It meant everything to me. Electronic Party Ireland took a chance on me and believed in me when not many people did. When you put yourself out there, you quickly learn who truly supports you and who just wishes they had the courage to try something themselves. Your circle gets smaller, but it gets real. Electronic Party Ireland has been with me since the beginning, and I value that so much. Their level of production and effort is incredible, and they’re only getting bigger. I’m proud to be part of their journey.

“I want people to feel completely free, totally present and engulfed in the energy.”

7. What is your dream festival to play?

In Ireland, Electric Picnic would be the dream; there’s so much sentiment attached to it for me. Internationally, Creamfields is incredible and left a huge impression on me. But I can also see myself in Ibiza. I have a special connection to that place, and it feels like a natural part of where I’m heading.

8. What do you hope people will feel after listening to a Skulhane set?

I want people to feel completely free, totally present and engulfed in the energy. There shouldn’t be a single thought pulling them anywhere else. I want them to fully lose themselves in the atmosphere and live entirely in the moment.

9. Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Honestly, I don’t know, and I don’t care. I’m focused on putting my all into the present and into every opportunity that comes my way. Things can change rapidly or slowly and you can never predict which. So five years from now doesn’t matter. What matters is giving everything I have to what I’m doing right now.

10. What’s your favourite thing about Limerick?

My favourite thing about Limerick is the people. There’s a spirit in Limerick you don’t find anywhere else you never know who you’ll meet and that’s what makes the city special.
