Students from third level colleges around the country were awarded for running events, developing and designing marketing and engineering projects and creating videos, animations, radio ads and graphics for the National Transport Authority’s Smarter Travel Campus Awards 2020. The entries produced by students, promote ‘smarter’ modes of transport; particularly walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling.

The awards were run virtually this year and MC’d by Tara Stewart of RTE 2FM who said, “I really enjoyed being able to present the Smarter Travel Campus Awards for 2020! All the winners and finalists were so creative and inspiring. I know the future of eco-friendly travel is in awesome hands.”

Limerick students from Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) and Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) won multiple national awards.

Students Kyle Dee, Eoin Melia, Nicole Devennie and Jack Conroy from Limerick Institute of Technology picked up the top prize for their Audio and Orla McNamee from Cork Institute of Technology was the winner in the animation category.

Students Patrick Szoltysek, Marta Di Giovanni & Darek Kozdroj, also from Limerick Institute of Technology, won the Best Video category.

Winners of the Lecturers Award 2020 were Paraic Carroll, University College Dublin (Engineering), Sarah Arnold, Maynooth University and Nora Ni Fhlatharta, Limerick Institute of Technology (Multimedia) and Dorothy Keane, Institute of Technology Carlow (Marketing).

Nora Ni Fhlatharta said, “This is the second year running the Film & Music students and lecturing staff of the Creative Technologies programmes LSAD have been awarded the national Smarter Travel Campus Award. A fantastic achievement and I would like to commend all the nominees for their submissions and the high quality of the projects. Thanks especially to Sharon Daly of Transport Ireland for all her support through the competition. Already looking forward to next year’s competition”

“In spite of the colleges closing just before the submission date, we received a huge number of fantastic entries across the disciplines. We are delighted with the quality of entries again this year. Congratulations to all students and lecturers who made the extra effort to take part. We’re already looking forward to next year,” said Sharon Daly, Smarter Travel Campus Consultant, National Transport Authority.

The Smarter Travel Campus Awards are organised by the Smarter Travel Campus programme of the National Transport Authority. This was the sixth year of the awards. It was open to third level institutions in Ireland who are partners of the Smarter Travel Campus programme.
