Limerick Smarter Travel Campus Programme expands

The Smarter Travel Campus Programme expands as the Further Education and Training Centre becomes 23rd Irish business campus to join the programme.

The Further Education and Training Centre, Kilmallock Road Campus, Limerick, has signed up to the National Transport Authority’s Smarter Travel Campus Programme.

Run locally by Limerick Smarter Travel (LST) in association with the National Transport Authority (NTA), the Programme assists Irish further education and third level Institutions through the provision of a free, voluntary package relating to access to, or movement through, their campus, through the promotion of walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing.

Ten of Limerick’s largest workplaces and campuses are participating in the programme including University of Limerick, Limerick Institute of Technology, Limerick College of Further Education and Mary Immaculate College. The combined workplaces and campuses in which Limerick Smarter Travel are engaging with over 32,000 staff and students to date. 

The Further Education and Training Centre, Kilmallock Road Campus is one of several further education and training campuses within the Limerick & Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) and is now one of two campuses involved in  Limerick Smarter Travel, the other being Limerick College of Further Education.

“The National Transport Authority is delighted to welcome a further campus of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board as a partner of the Smarter Travel Campus programme and we look forward to working with the campus to encourage and support smarter travel choices,” said Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority.

“The Further Education and Training Centre, Kilmallock Road Campus joins the 11 existing Limerick Smarter Travel’s Workplace and Campus partners who have already committed to encourage and support smarter travel on their sites.  Limerick Smarter Travel is delighted to have Limerick College of Further Education on board and look forward to working with both the college and the National Transport Authority to implement the project,” commented Miriam Donoghue, Project Coordinator of Limerick Smarter Travel.

“Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board is delighted that the Limerick Smarter Travel Programme is now extended to two of its’ Further Education and Training Campuses. LCETB looks forward to working with Limerick Smarter Travel and the National Transport Authority in achieving the various goals and objectives of the programme,” said Paul Patton, Further Education Training Officer, LCETB.

Resources available under the Authority’s Smarter Travel Campus Programme include site-specific advice and information from experienced Travel Planners, an online travel survey and analysis, a free group on the website carsharing.ie, mapping resources and access to walking and cycling challenges. Benefits of engagement in the programme include reduced costs associated with travel and parking, enhanced green profile and more active travel by both students and staff.
