Grant funding for the development of social, community and economic projects in Limerick’s regeneration areas has been announced.

The Social Intervention Fund 2022 is open to applications from any organisation, club or group within the Moyross, Southill, St. Mary’s Park or Ballinacurra-Weston communities.

Submitted ideas should have a focus on improving social inclusion in regeneration areas. 

Each year, €3 million in Social Intervention Funding is allocated to social and community projects, with a further €1 million pledged to economic development.

Speaking to I Love Limerick, Cathaoirleach of the Metropolitan District of Limerick and Limerick City East councillor, Sarah Kiely, highlights what Social Intervention Funding 2022 offers to communities. 

“The funding is a very positive thing in regeneration areas, especially for sports clubs and community organisations. The Southhill Hub is a fantastic set-up, and that would have evolved from Social Intervention and regeneration funding. Hyde Rangers FC and Prospect Priory FC also benefit from it. These clubs target young people and adults, trying to keep them active in sports,” said Ms Kiely. 

Once a grant application is accepted by Limerick City and County Council, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage will pass it to a Social Intervention Fund assessment panel for approval.

Successful projects will then receive funding in two parts. Grants above €10,000 will receive an immediate 60% payment, while those less than €10,000 will receive 90%. The remainder will be delivered when the project is completed and financially approved by Limerick City and County Council. 

Social Intervention Funding is part of a larger €300 million Limerick Regeneration Framework Implementation Plan, launched in 2013 to revitalise struggling communities by improving standards of living, opportunity, and health and wellbeing. 

The Regeneration Plan is due to finish in 2023, along with Social Intervention Funding. Therefore, the Social Intervention Fund 2022 could be the last chance for social and community development in regeneration areas in the near future.

“We need to look at how we are going to continue to support groups and organisations in regeneration areas. It is vital that we look past the regeneration programme and see how we are going to fund these projects in the future,” acknowledges councillor Kiely.

She also stresses the importance of applying for Social Intervention Funding before the December 16, 2021 deadline.  

“It is vital that community groups and organisations get their applications in as soon as possible because if they don’t they will lose out.”
