A total of 381 children from 13 schools across Limerick took part in the 2026 Sports Hall Athletics Day with Limerick Sports Partnership.
The project was the culmination of a successful school programme aimed at boosting youth activity in conjunction with Limerick Sports Partnership.
The initiative is an indoor athletics programme that specifically develops a child’s running, jumping and throwing skills, consisting of Track & Field Events and promotes multi-skill development for kids from 3rd to 6th class.
Participating schools were provided with specialist athletics equipment for a five-week block during the school year, allowing children to practise and build confidence in advance of the final event. Schools were required to collect and safely store the equipment, ensuring it remained in good condition and was used indoors only.
Teachers also had the opportunity to take part in the dedicated training sessions hosted annually at UL Sport Arena, alongside access to training videos to support delivery of the programme within schools.

The aim of Limerick Sports Partnership is “Getting Limerick Active” together by increasing participation in sport; ensuring that local resources are used to best effect; operating as a mechanism to coordinate the efforts of all key influencers to further develop sporting opportunities for local communities; and being a vital link between the needs of local people, the work of other sports organisations/officers and national agencies and state agencies.
Following the event, the Limerick Sports Partnership said, “Huge thank you to all the schools who joined us for our annual Sports Hall Athletics Blitz! It was high-energy and absolutely full of fun from start to finish! A big well done to every single participant—you were amazing—and congratulations to all our winners!”
Limerick Sports Partnership is based in UL Sport Arena at the University of Limerick. This location provides them with access to a weekly footfall of 12-15,000 people while also creating links and relationships from grassroots, education and professional sport.
