Whether you want to see that old, much loved classic in all its cinematic glory, stunning productions from the acclaimed National Theatre Live, delightful children’s movies to make for the perfect family afternoon or learn something new via fascinating documentaries – the Spring 2019 UCH Cinema Season is for you!

First up, on Monday 28th January, is the funny, poignant coming of age story Almost Famous. Set in 1973 this is the story of 15-year-old music fan William, and his assignment for Rolling Stone magazine to cover up and coming band Stillwater! This film stars the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bangs, with the celebrated actor being remembered on the 5th anniversary of his untimely passing.

Following the huge success of the screening of the National Theatre Live’s Hamlet last Season, we are delighted to screen the NTL hugely acclaimed production of Macbeth – Shakespeare’s most intense and terrifying tragedy on Monday 4th February. Starring Rory Kinnear and Anne-Marie Duff, Macbeth comes alive in this edgy, contemporary production which explores the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake.

All are welcome to relive one of the seminal films of their youth on Sunday 24th February, while at the same time introducing the next generation to the absolute delights of Tom Hanks’ Big! After wishing to be made “big”, a teenage boy wakes the next morning to find himself mysteriously in the body of an adult – making all his wildest dreams come true! Starring Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins and Robert Loggia and with classic scenes including the toy store “piano” playing, this is not to be missed on the big screen! Please note this will be a Sensory Friendly screening and suitable for all.

The action-comedy-thriller, Run Lola Run, is this Season’s International Education Division pick on Monday 25th February. Mixing dazzling editing, techno music and a film school’s worth of cinematic technique, this was the breakout film hit of 1998!

To mark Seachtain na Gaeilge, the stunning The Camino Voyage will be screened on Monday 11th March. An epic 2,500 km modern-day Celtic odyssey, this is an intimate documentary which charts the trials and tribulations of a voyage from Ireland to Santiago de Compostela, featuring Brendán Ó Beaglaoich, Glen Hansard, Liam Holden, Brendan-Pháid Ó Muircheartaigh and Domhall Mac Síthigh. From Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle (La La Land) comes another music-themed film, Whiplash, on March 25th. Starring J.K. Simmons, this is the story of a promising young drummer and a mentor who will stop at nothing to realise his students’ potential.

University Concert Hall is delighted to include another Exhibition on Screen this season with the screening of Michaelangelo – Love and Death on Monday 8th April. This explores the life and work of renowned sculptor, painter, architect and poet Michelangelo, via a cinematic journey through the great chapels and museums of Florence, Rome and the Vatican, to the print and drawing rooms of Europe.

Enjoy the magic of the original Paddington movie on April 28th and make it a Sunday afternoon to remember for the whole family! From the producers of Harry Potter comes this heart-warming story of a young Peruvian bear who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington station, he meets the kindly Brown family and his adventures begin. Please note this will be a Sensory Friendly screening and suitable for all.

Bringing the Spring 2019 UCH Cinema Season to an end is the timeless gangster film, Goodfellas, on Monday 29th April. Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, this classic explores the life of mobster and FBI informant Henry Hill, all set to a true-to-period soundtrack. Goodfellas is found on many “favourite films of all time” lists and to see it on the big screen will be a treat for fans!
