Mother’s Day Spring Serenade at the Hunt Museum

A beautiful evening of singing and cello awaits you on Mother’s Day. The Hunt Museum presents Spring Serenade with soprano Helen Hancock, pianist Irina Dernova and cellist Péter Sebestyén and a program of music from Haydn to Rachmaninov and from Purcell to Britten.  Helen, Irina and Peter recently performed a lunchtime recital together in St. Mary’s Cathedral and look forward to presenting a longer program of music. 

Helen, a music teacher and choral director from Galway, attended a choral conducting summer school at the Association of Irish Choirs (now SIng Ireland) in 2015 in UL and had a singing lesson with Limerick’s International Tenor and renowned singing teacher Owen Gilhooly.  Helen had been studying singing at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin many years ago but had stopped solo singing after moving to Galway. She has been travelling to the Midwest Vocal Academy in Lisnagry for the past 4 years for lessons with Owen and has completed her ARSM diploma and attended summer schools in the UK.  Helen and Irina have been busy performing lunchtime recitals in St Mary’s Cathedral and gave a very successful performance in St Michaels Pery Square for Culture Night. Helen has also performed with Owen’s choir AOIDE in concert, the most recent one being for Limerick Suicide Watch last Christmas in St Michael’s Pery Square. Helen and Péter are teaching colleagues in Coole Music in Galway and Peter played in her debut evening concert in Galway last November.   Helen has this to say “I really love Limerick, as that is where all my musical dreams are coming true!  We are really looking forward to presenting this great program of music in the Hunt Museum.”

Irina Dernova performs regularly as an accompanist, working with a number of Limerick, Dublin and Galway singers, instrumentalists and choirs. Irina teaches piano in Mid-West Vocal Academy and Clare Music Makers.  In collaboration with Limerick Opera Workshop Irina will perform at new Opera Workshop production at May 3rd-6th performances in Sailors Home in Limerick and at the Celebratory Concert dedicated to 175-Anniversary of St.Michael’s church (Pery Square) with Owen Gilhooly (tenor), Majella Cullagh (soprano) and choir AOIDE on the 10th of May.

Péter Sebestyén performs regularly as a solo performer and orchestral musician.  He was born to a Hungarian family of folk musicians and as a classical cellist, he won several prizes at national competitions. He studied at the Liszt Ferenc University of Music in Budapest and received his Diploma as a Performer and Teacher of the cello in 2008. He completed his Masters with a First Class Honours at the Irish World Academy in 2010 and was a recipient of the RTÉ lyric fm scholarship. Since 2008 Peter has been a permanent member of Concerto Malaga chamber orchestra in Spain and he has played concerts with Concerto Malaga and Los Romeros Guitar Quartet in Germany and in America too. He is currently working in Ireland as a cello teacher in Galway and Clare.
