Work has begun on a two-block extension at St Camillus Hospital for the elderly on the Shelbourne Road. The build, carried out by Conack Construction, will consist of 75 long-stay bedrooms, ancillary accommodation and a new two-story entrance, connecting the new blocks to the existing building. The original building will also undergo refurbishment, in order to provide additional ancillary accommodation.
The facilities new bedrooms will replace existing long-stay rooms, as part of a Government strategy to bring long stay public care facilities up to the highest standard.
The €18.9 million development plan was unveiled by the HSE in 2018 and was initially expected to take three years to complete.
Construction begins as Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly confirms that almost €26m in government funding will be provided for the development of health care facilities in Limerick.

Commenting on this funding, TD for Limerick County Niall Collins said, “Under the Health Capital Plan 2021, which will be published in the coming weeks, St Camillus Hospital will receive €7.6m for a 75-bed community nursing unit to replace long-stay beds as per the Social Care Priority list.”
Built in 1841 during the workhouse era, St Camillus Hospital has been a centre for elderly care since 1933. Over the past number of years, the hospital has undergone several refurbishments to bring it up to date with HSE standards.
Minister Collins applauded the Government’s support for Limerick’s healthcare facilities.
“As we come out the other side of what has been a most gruelling period, where so much has been asked of our health services, I’m delighted to see continued Government investment. I look forward to the progression of these long-awaited projects.”
