Pupils, parents, teachers and past pupils took to the dizzy heights of Thomond Park on Friday, June 20, to raise funds for Glin’s national school, St. Fergus NS.

Organised by the Parents Council, the fundraiser called on the community to face their fears and abseil 125 feet down Thomond Park in a bid to raise funds for extra-curricular activities in the school.

26 abseilers took part on the day, where for some it was a nerve-wracking experience, but for other thrill seekers, it was a walk in the park, or Thomond Park to be exact!

Parents Council member Annmarie O’Connor was delighted with the event, saying, “We are thrilled that everyone came on board to support the event. Even people who were too scared to abseil sponsored others, so it has been a real community effort.

“The school provides all our children with a safe learning environment and as parents, it’s our way of giving back. We are so grateful to everyone who took part today. It has been hugely successful and we have had a very special experience today in Thomond Park.”

Feedback from the abseilers was also very positive, with St Fergus student Grace Sweeney saying that she couldn’t sleep the night before as she was so nervous.

She said, “I wasn’t sure if I could do it or not as when you get up there it is so high. I thought about who and what I was doing it for and I just went for it. I loved my time in primary school with all my friends and I was very happy to do this as a way of saying Thank You.”

Thomond Park is home to Munster Rugby, home of the brave and faithful and the 26 people who lined out for St Fergus today were just that.

St Fergus’ National School is situated in the village of Glin, on the Shannon Estuary in West Limerick. The school aims to provide a safe and healthy environment where each child can develop and learn to their full potential.
