St. Gabriel’s Greyhound Benefit night for Regional Respite Centre
St. Gabriel’s School and Centre will hold a Greyhound Benefit Night on Saturday 16 September at 7.30pm at the Limerick Greyhound Stadium in a direct effort to raise funds for the Regional Respite Centre.
St. Gabriel’s School and Centre provides education and an outpatient therapy service to over 500 children with physical and learning disabilities, genetic conditions, severe neurological impairment and life limiting conditions.
The services and facilities provided by St. Gabriel’s have evolved over the years to meet the changing and growing needs of the children. Some of this progress has been state funded i.e. addition of classrooms and therapy centre building however the more recent developments which include: a purpose-built hydrotherapy pool, the installation of a sensory playground and the extension of the nursing unit here at St. Gabriel’s campus are all as a direct result of philanthropy and community fundraising initiatives.
The need for the development of a Regional Respite Centre for the whole of the Mid-West including (Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary) has come from recognising that children with severe complex disabilities, especially those with high nursing needs have no respite service outside of the home. Families and parents are desperate for this type of short-term overnight respite facility to give them an occasional break from their 24hour caring role.
In 2014 St. Gabriel’s purchased a site in Mungret to build a Respite Centre. The development will include a 5-bedroom, high end medical and nursing facility with family and recreational space. The cost of the building project is €2.25million and is due to commence later this year. It is supported and will be partly funded by the JP McManus Foundation, however, a million Euro will need to be raised through community fundraising activities and other financial support measures.
