The Dean of St Mary’s Cathedral, the Very Rev’d Niall J.W. Sloane, has presented cheques to three local charities following a fundraiser held at the City Centre cathedral in May.
The cheque presentation follows the successful “Cars at the Cathedral”, a display of special and rare cars and motorcycles, held in the grounds of the historic Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick, on Saturday, May 3.
The popular ‘Cars at the Cathedral’ event was held as part of the city’s summer festival, Riverfest Limerick, and saw hundreds of car enthusiasts and festival goers turn up to St Mary’s Cathedral in a bid to raise funds for three worthy charities.
The Dean and his colleagues from the Cathedral presented cheques of €1,100 each to Children’s Grief Centre, Limerick Island Community Partners, and Saint Mary’s Parish, Athlunkard Street.
All the charities are based in Limerick City and provide different ranges of services to the local community.
The Children’s Grief Centre was founded in 2009 by, Sister Helen Culhane, together with a support group of professionals. Helen’s vision was that the Centre would provide children and young people with a listening ear. The Centre is well established within the Mid-West region, serving counties Clare, Tipperary, Limerick and further afield
Limerick Island Community Partners say, “Our vision is to be the one-stop community voluntary organisation within the Limerick Island Community. To improve lives through community enrichment and economic development within a safe, healthy and sustainable physical environment.”
Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick is the oldest building in the city still in continuous use. It was founded in 1168 and is an iconic presence in the city landscape. At its core the Cathedral seeks every day to Welcome In & Reach Out.
Whilst primarily a place of Christian Worship it is one of the major tourist attractions within the city of Limerick. Through its mission Saint Mary’s seeks every opportunity to promote love, peace and justice and to offer support wherever it can within the local community
