St Munchin’s Community Centre are continuing their state-of-the-art Meals on Wheels service throughout this COVID-19 crisis, despite the closure of their Age-Friendly Campus, and ongoing financial pressures. This week, the workers at the centre organised and delivered 400 care package lunches to pupils of both Thomond Primary School and CBS Primary School, as their closures force pupils to study from home.

St Munchin’s volunteer Laura Hughes, who works with the Garda Youth Diversion Project in Moyross, offered her time to organise and deliver these care packages to the kids, who are currently off school due to COVID-19. Knowing the importance of such services, she said, “I jumped at the opportunity to help deliver the care packages to the kids while they are off school, as working with young people is my passion. I was very happy to get involved with this Government initiative to feed the children while they are off school, and our care packages are made up of basic necessities such as bread, cereal, crackers, spaghetti hoops, as well as treats such as biscuits, crisps, and of course, an Easter Egg, with it being Easter this weekend.”

St Munchin’s have been making a major effort to stay in operation for as long as possible during the COVID-19 crisis, continuing to tend to vulnerable people who rely on their Meals on Wheels service. But funding is at an all-time low, and the financial consequences of COVID-19 are unfortunately becoming apparent. 

The centre has been forced to reduce their staff from 26 to 10 over the last month, as a result of the closures of their hair salon, beauticians, florist, rent-a-room service, and now, their Age-Friendly Campus. Their Meals on Wheels Service continues to thrive though, delivering over 200 meals a day to the doors of people across Limerick and parts of Clare. But support is badly needed if this essential service is to continue.

Speaking about their continued efforts, St Munchin’s Community Centre Manager, Linda Ledger, said, “I know we are making a huge difference because the amount of people who are isolated and need our service is increasing all the time. But we need assistance to help feed Limerick and our surrounding areas, every little goes a long way and we thank you for your continuous support throughout these hard times. It is through donations and communities working together that we will get through this difficult time.” St Munchins care packages
