St Munchin’s Community Centre has made a public appeal for long-term support amid a funding crisis which has seen the much-loved community centre announce is will not be able to provide its traditional Christmas Day lunches for the elderly.

Following the announcement that, for the first time in more than 20 years, the community centre will not be able to provide the Christmas lunch, members of the public have joined in raising their voices for St Munchin’s.”It is with heavy hearts that we share that, due to ongoing reductions in funding, we will not be able to provide our Christmas Day lunches for the elderly this year,” reads a statement from St Munchin’s Community Centre, adding, “This tradition has been a part of our community for over 20 years, and it pains us deeply to pause something that means so much to so many.”

The centre highlighted that “rising costs and increasing need” have been putting a strain on the services, with the group saying, “Rising costs and increasing need have placed us under immense strain, and we are receiving more calls and emails every day from those seeking support. Without additional funding or support, we may be forced to close our doors entirely in 2026 — something none of us want.”

As many call for the centre to set up fundraising measures such as an online fundraising campaign, the group acknowledged that they are grateful for the public support, but said the long-term survival of the centre could not be “solved through short-term fundraising”.

St. Munchin’s Community Centre is a community enterprise centre in the heart of Limerick, that offers many services to our local area and the wider Limerick community.

They say that without long-term support, the vital community centre could be forced to close its doors entirely in 2026.

The statement reads, “Many of you have asked about setting up a GoFundMe or donating to help. While we are deeply grateful for these offers, this is not an issue that can be solved through short-term fundraising. The challenges facing St. Munchin’s Community Centre are much larger — rising operational costs, reduced grant allocations, and growing community demand have created an unsustainable situation.

“To safeguard the future of our services, we urgently need long-term, structured government support and recognition of the critical role we play in Limerick’s social infrastructure. We remain committed to advocating for our community and to finding sustainable solutions that ensure no one is left behind. Thank you to everyone who continues to stand with us — your support strengthens our voice as we push for the change that’s truly needed.”
Following the public outcry for support, St Munchin’s Community Centre said, “The compassion, care, and sense of solidarity shown by our community has been overwhelming, and it means more to us than words can express.”
