St. Munchin’s Community Centre

It has been two years since I first visited St. Munchin’s Community Centre in Kileely and last week we returned to see their progress since the opening of their newly renovated premises. Last year the Limerick philanthropist JP Mc Manus awarded the centre €300,000 to build an extension to their building. Responsible for this achievement is centre Manager Linda Ledger who is truly inspirational and a force to be reckoned with, it is through her hard work and efforts that the entire community is now growing for the better. “We have more than 40 volunteers and I cannot tell you how much this means to all of us. It is like a dream come through as this will improve the lives of so many in our community. JP Mc Manus is a legend and words cannot describe how blessed and grateful we are’, Linda told me. The centre is self-sufficient as they generate income and that’s why JP invested in them. They help the local government by training people, creating employment and by providing services to the elderly they enable them to continue living in their own homes for as long as possible, keeping them out of nursing homes thereby saving the government money. They also provide meeting spaces for local groups and address isolation and social exclusion for the elderly of the community. Over the last six years this centre has assisted their local community to develop a sense of pride and reach its full potential by responding to needs and issues as they arise. By providing a central, accessible and visible hub for local community activity, in response to local demand they continue to expand its services and facilities such as a restaurant, florist, hairdressers, launderette and computer classes to name but a few.
