A new chapter in community wellbeing and empowerment has begun at St Munchin’s Community Centre with the recent success of its Sports and Social Hub Campus fitness training programme, made possible through generous support from the REACH Fund via Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board.

In partnership with ProFi Fitness School Ireland, the programme has equipped 12 local participants with certified Diploma qualifications as Gym Instructors and Fitness Class Instructors—a major step forward for both personal development and the wider community’s health.

These 12 newly trained instructors now represent a powerful local resource—individuals from the community, for the community—who will go on to support and inspire thousands of residents across the northside of Limerick.

The positive ripple effect of this initiative will be felt for years to come, as access to fitness, health education, and wellbeing support becomes more locally rooted, inclusive, and sustainable. With this course, if one of the participants reaches 100 people, then 12 instructors can reach 1,200 people & more in our Communities.

“This programme has been transformational,” said Linda Ledger for St Munchin’s.

“Not just for the 12 participants, but for what it means to have home-grown fitness leaders who understand the needs, challenges, and strengths of our community.”

The new instructors are expected to play a key role in delivering group classes and health promotion initiatives

The training was delivered over a number of weeks and included modules in anatomy, exercise science, programme planning, and group instruction. Participants gained real-world experience working in the Centre’s newly developed Sports and Social Hub, with some already starting to deliver classes and support existing programmes for youth, older adults, and people returning to physical activity after illness.

By investing in local people, the programme aligns perfectly with the Centre’s long-standing mission: to improve community wellbeing through empowerment, inclusion, and opportunity. With growing concerns around physical inactivity, mental health, and social isolation, especially post-COVID, the presence of local, approachable, and qualified instructors is a major asset.

“This is about more than fitness,” said one graduate of the course, adding, “It’s about connection, confidence, and giving back. We’re not just teaching workouts—we’re helping people feel better, build friendships, and live healthier lives.”

The new instructors are expected to play a key role in delivering group classes and health promotion initiatives as part of the Centre’s broader vision for an active, engaged, and resilient community.

Several participants are already exploring next steps.

From seniors’ Fitness, to local clubs & to youth circuit training, the possibilities are wide-ranging and tailored to local needs. This initiative also supports employment pathways and future enterprise, opening doors for participants to work in gyms, run independent classes, or contribute to the Centre’s expanding wellness programming.

Several participants are already exploring next steps, including supporting local teams in Moyross, Ballynanty, Shelbourne, Caherdavin & Kileely. As the Sports and Social Hub continues to grow, St. Munchin’s Community Centre remains committed to ensuring accessible, community-led health and fitness opportunities for all.

The Centre extends its heartfelt thanks to the REACH Fund, the Limerick and Clare ETB, DEASP and ProFi Fitness School Ireland for their partnership, vision, and belief in the power of local people to lead local change.

The positive ripple effect of this initiative will be felt for years to come, as access to fitness, health education, and wellbeing support becomes more locally rooted.
