A campaign has been set up by Limerick woman Stephanie Lacey on behalf of her friend Sushmitha who is currently living through an unimaginable hell in India. Sushmitha worked and lived in Limerick for many years but returned to India two years ago.

Since the height of the Covid-19 crisis in India, Sushmitha has lost three family members with five others in critical condition. No medicine or supplies are reaching them and anything they do have to survive the pandemic is running out fast.

Just this week, Sushmitha lost her 29 year old cousin, Sandeep. Before contracting Covid, he  was a healthy young man. Prior to his death, he was on a ventilator which cost his family 100000 IND each day. Sandeep leaves his son Nivansh and a loving wife and family behind him.

Stephanie has set up this GoFundMe page to help support Sushmitha and her family during this time. The money will go towards hospital bills and funeral costs and whatever else is needed to help keep Sushmitha and her family safe during this tragic state of emergency.

It was later tragically announced that Sandeep passed away earlier this week. Leaving his son Nivansh and loving wife and family behind him.

Stephanie Lacey, organiser fundraiser said, “I’m going to keep this gofundme open for anyone that wants to donate to the mountain of hospital bills they still have to pay, for his funeral if the family is allowed to have his body and for his son and wife.”

The scenes of suffering in India are hard to comprehend. As of May 14, more than 24 million cases of COVID-19 had been reported, with a rolling average of 378 000 cases a day, together with more than 222 000 deaths, which experts believe are likely to be substantial underestimates while hospitals are overwhelmed, and health workers are exhausted and becoming infected.
