Two Nights of Strauss with the Irish Chamber Orchestra at the Milk Market

The Irish Chamber Orchestra successfully created an amphitheatre at Limerick’s iconic Milk Market for Carmen last year. This same space made architectural headlines in 2011, winning the top RIAI design with a giant umbrella-like structure which spans the entire half-acre space of the Milk Market. The Irish Chamber Orchestra transforms this space once more, capturing the opulence of Vienna and seating in excess of 500 people each night at its upcoming Viennese Prom, on Thursday 28 & Friday 29 May.

These two festive evenings of music and song from the great Viennese composer Johann Strauss feature waltzes and tunes that live on forever. Echoes of The Blue DanubeThe Tritch-Tratsch Polka, The Radetsky March alongside favourite arias from Die Fledermaus and The Gypsy Baron will resonate across the Shannon.

Maestro Jochen Rieder, who currently conducts the great Jonas Kaufmann, will lead a 35-piece Irish Chamber Orchestra for the first time. Rieder began his professional career at the Badisches Staastheater in Karlsruhe and at the Bremen Opera. He has collaborated with the Opernhaus Zurich, the Opera National, Paris, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, and more.

One of Germany’s finest young coloratura sopranos, Gloria Rehm, will delight and charm audiences with her renditions of Strauss arias while waltzes will feature dancers from Ballet Ireland in glorious costumes of the period.  Hostess for this fabulous evening is RTE Lyric fm’s Drivetime presenter, Liz Nolan.
