The musical summer camp will run from August 12 -14 in Limerick and places are being accepted now on a first-come, first-served basis.

The camp is aimed at children aged 5+, and encourages both children/teens with or without musical knowledge to sign-up! There are classes tailored for all levels!

Group activities include drumming, musical theatre, choir, trad band, pop group, tots choir, world chant medley, songwriting, recording studio, folk band, ukulele group and much more musical workshop activities.

A performance for parents will occur on the last day in which everyone will perform one song together. There is no need to have any musical experience, as kids will be broken into groups depending on age and musical experience.

Founder of the summer camp Sophie Olsthoorn graduated from Music in UCC in 2015. Her background in music began from a very early age, learning the tin-whistle at only 5, as well as the traditional Irish Flute. Sophie has completed all ABRSM grades (8 levels) in classical piano, and music theory.

When asked what drove her to start the camp, Sophie said, “I started the Summer camp in Ballyneety last year because I wanted to give kids the chance to experience a range of different instruments that they would normally not get the chance to try out. I wanted to have a camp that incorporated all genres of music, and where kids would also get the chance to perform at the end of the week. The camp is aimed to introduce kids to music in a fun environment, and also to encourage kids that are already musicians to develop and broaden their genres.”

Summer Music with Sophie has a successful first year in 2018, helping kids from all musical levels who always wanted to try out some music.

“Last year we had an amazing experience, said Sophie. “It was fantastic seeing the kids perform the song, ‘This is Me’ together on the last day of camp. We had children playing the bongos, guitar, pianos, percussion instruments, and vocals. We had solo parts and group harmony parts. Seeing that performance really blew everyone away. It is amazing how talented the kids are! We also had a fantastic piano student who was visiting from The Netherlands and an incredible violinist who both ended up writing a Sonatina together. We helped them compile the Sonatina, and they performed it together on the last day. The kids all had a fantastic time, and we were delighted once we got that excellent feedback.”
