Limerick’s Louise McGrath crowned All-Island Super Chef Schools Cookery Competition Winner 2016.

The competition took place on February 10 and 11, 2016 in St. Angela’s College, Sligo. The All-Island Super Chef Schools Cookery Competition 2016 was judged by a panel of expert judges. Included on the panel was award winning chef Shamzuri Hanifa of The Cottage Restaurant, Leitrim.

Super Chef was open to all post-primary students across the island of Ireland. It is also open to entrants from Youthreach Centres within the Republic of Ireland. Based on almost 900 entries submitted by over 200 schools and Youthreach centres across the country, 32 students were selected to go forward to the 2016 final.

This competition which is in its second running year, is backed by Healthy Ireland and encourages students to create tasty, healthy and affordable meals wherever they may be. Students were asked to submit their favourite healthy main course dish for two.

Super Chef Schools Cookery Competition Winner, Louise McGrath won over the judges with her ‘Wholemeal, Upside Down Salmon Tart with Cream Cheese’ recipe.

Head of the Home Economics Department in St. Angela’s College Amanda McCloat, said, “This competition aims to encourage students to display their culinary capabilities while also promoting the importance of healthy eating and giving due cognisance to budgetary requirements. We are delighted to allow students the opportunity to showcase their talents once again this year.”

Shamzuri Hanifa of The Cottage Restaurant, described his involvement in the competition, saying, “I was delighted to be involved in this year’s Super Chef. I think it’s a great initiative. I started my own culinary career at 12 so, it’s fantastic to see other students getting encouragement and support from a young age as well. I was really impressed at the level of talent shown by students across the two days of competition. All students showed great skill and it’s clear they have a passion for food. I have no doubt they have great careers ahead of them.”

Super Chef Schools Cookery Competition Winner, Louise Mc Grath from John the Baptist Community School, Co Limerick was under the supervision of her teacher Ms Elaine O’Donnell.
