Walking and trekking group Walk in Ireland are organising a challenge in aid of Pieta House, the suicide and self-harm crisis centre, that will take place in August and September this year. The challenge will take in the highest mountain in Ireland, Carrauntoohill and the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis. The group are hoping to attract as many trekkers and walkers as possible to raise funds for the charity.

Both climbs are challenging but doable says Cathal McNicholas of Walk in Ireland; “Neither climbs are technical and can be completed by any reasonably fit person. You will be guided on both climbs by experienced guides, giving you the best opportunity to complete these challenges” he said.

Each person is asked to make a donation of €500 to register which will go towards Pieta House. Pieta House provides a professional, one-to-one therapeutic service for people who are experiencing suicidal ideation, people who have attempted suicide, and people who are engaging in self-harm. Anyone can make an appointment; a doctor’s referral or a psychiatric report is not required and the service is completely free of charge. There are currently four centres in Dublin, one in Limerick, one in Roscrea, one in Tuam and a recently-opened centre in Cork city. Another is due to open in Castleisland before the end of the year.

Renowned adventurer Pat Falvey is encouraging people to get involved; “Cathal and the team are great to be undertaking such a big challenge and I hope lots of people get on board and join them” Pat said. “Both challenges will be difficult but the fact that it’s for such a good cause is a great motivation. I wish them all the very best of luck” he said.

The Carrauntoohill leg of the challenge is planned for a Saturday in August, weather permitting and the Ben Nevis leg is set for the 8th- 12th September. The deposit must be paid on or before the 30th April.

If you think you have what it takes to complete this challenge and want to raise funds for Pieta House while you’re at it, contact Cathal McNicholas at 0505 24845 or [email protected] for an information pack or to get involved.
