Written by local writer Sharon Bromell and directed by Niamh Bowen, The 27 Club, is loosely based on the legend surrounding rock stars that died at 27 years old. The show is set to premiere at The Belltable on the 19th and 20th of March.

Legend has it, that they sold their souls to the Devil to become masters of their craft but in turn owed their lives for this privilege. The story began in the 1930’s when Robert Johnson transformed from a mediocre musician to an incredible performer.

His village in Mississippi didn’t believe he had achieved this alone; they were convinced he made a deal with the Devil to become the best. He lost his life at 27 to repay his debt of stardom and many artists are said to have followed suit throughout the years. Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison are among those associated with the 27 club. The play capturing the tale of both drama and crime is set in modern times against a backdrop of music by the 27 Club Stars.

The play encapsulates the story of a teenage musician called Lucas who attends a rich boarding school in London. He is discovered by a well renowned record producer but as his back story does not fit the narrative of a rock star a new one is created. The real story is leaked to the press and a bigger truth comes to light, revealing a past left behind. The play is filled with drama, crime, comedy and intrigue.

The 27 Club is sponsored by W.J. Souths Pub who are also offering a pre-show dining option. 27 Supper Club is available with your play ticket from 4pm to 7pm on both nights. Pre- booking is essential.

The 27 Club embraces a cast of thirteen people from new theatre group Killer Productions. They have been rehearsing since June at various locations around Limerick including Sean Choill Sports Complex, St. Marys Adult Education and LCETB O’Connell Avenue campus.

Supported by the LCETB, local writer and founder of Killer Productions Sharon Bromell commented, “I’m delighted to finally see the script come to life and watch the progress from page to stage.”

“I am excited to be onboard with the 27 Club writer Sharon. We have a fantastic cast who are both talented and dedicated to the project. I am enjoying working alongside them so much. Limerick is in for a treat next March when the production hits the stage,” added Director Niamh Bowen.

The 27 Club premiere’s at Belltable on the 19th and 20th of March and tickets are available through Belltable website and box office.
