A stone’s throw from the heart of Limerick City, The Barn Sauna and Cold Plunge, founded by Dave Behan of GoGym Limerick offers a combination of cold and heat therapy to soothe the body and mind.

Based at Coonagh Cross, Clondrinagh, Limerick, The Barn offers a sauna and cold plunge, allowing everyone the opportunity to experience a feeling like nothing before.

“I don’t like the cold, but I love what it does to me,” explained Dave as he told I Love Limerick about what made him come up with The Barn concept.

A session in The Barn can start with a dip in the cold water bath, or under the cold water plunge, followed by some time in a sauna.

This alternating experience is said to flood the body with happiness hormones, relieve pain and stress, and promote overall well-being.

Dave said, “When you have a cold shower or a cold bath, you get this surge of dopamine and adrenaline. It’s like electricity going to your body. When you mix that with extreme heat in the sauna, you get that state of calm. And then when you go from one to the other, do three cycles, by the time you leave here, you’re on cloud nine.”

The GoGym trainer explained his journey into the therapies started some years ago when he was going through a stressful time, Dave went sea swimming one day and when he stepped back on land he had “this instant invigoration, happiness and just felt alive”.

From there, he did his research and found studies linking cold therapies to helping with mental health and anxiety, saying they had “found great results”.

“So I went on a journey and six years later I’m still doing them,” Dave says, “I want to just impart it and share with as many people as I can. I built the barn because I wanted everyone to experience what I’ve experienced. And I wanted to create an urban escape that was convenient for people to come down and not to travel too far.”

He described how he wanted to create a welcoming environment and that The Barn is for everyone to use, from sports teams to individual athletes, and from the elderly to younger people, saying, “It’s life-changing, come visit the barn. It’s not a place, it’s a feeling.”

The Barn Sauna & Cold Plunge opens 7 days a week and is available from 4pm-10pm from Monday to Friday, and 9am-3pm on Saturdays and Sundays. With a straightforward booking system available online, The Barn makes it easy for anybody to enjoy this “urban escape”.
